Synopsis
The longest of the eight films American filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson completed this year, Erie is simple and perfect. Shot in the African American suburbs next to Lake Erie, it’s a handful of sequence shots (less than ten) of approximately ten minutes –which seem unconnected at first– that builds a multiple off-centered record of American industrial economy. Three people talk about the imminent shut down of a General Motors factory, a man tries to open a car with a screwdriver and a piece of wire, a hospital clerk sterilizes and prepares surgical equipment trays, a group of girls on a boat trip near a waterfall, and a few other things. With one foot in the documentary tradition –by observing the small to understand the huge– and the other in James Benning’s political structuralism, KJE sets up an immutably active film, one of those that still operate after its ending.
