Synopsis
Another complex montage of image and sounds; this time, it’s an adaptation of Masahiko Shimada’s short story “My Dear Mummy”, which was based on a true story. The mummified body of a man is found in the mountains. By his side, there is a notebook which reveals he has killed himself by starvation. The entries in that final journal are read out-loud by a voice over (it’s the voice of Petropolis’ director Petter Mettler) while Liechti imagines what his senses perceived as time went by. And so, the dying man’s hypnotic story flows through a tunnel of images that go from landscapes to hallucinations and abstractions. The sound of insects and birds is the soundtrack of this inner voyage.
