Synopsis
Forestry worker Han and his wife live in China’s remote northeast. In the winter of 2006, the government clears the area to build a reservoir. The Hans must survive by illegal hunting and trapping. But local officials insist on demolishing their barely inhabitable shack in the middle of the winter.
Xiao Li watches the Hans’ goats. He had run off with a woman and a goat, but returns, frostbitten and contrite, and is given shelter. He may be mentally disabled, or just weirdly, elementally different: he says little, but expresses himself through a sort of frenzied song and dance.
Yu Guangyi films on his own, living with his subjects until his batteries run out. He gets astonishingly close to the lives of these marginalized people, whom the state deems disposable. Watching with hyper-acute eyes, he preserves for us their indomitable songs of survival.
