Synopsis

Two brothers set out on a trip from the outskirts of Paramaribo (the capital of Suriname) to a nearby village. The two young men silently recreate the same trip that their ancestors made 300 years before them, when escaping from slavery that had been imposed in the colony by the Dutch empire. As they travel on foot, on a canoe, or by train, the landscape changes along; however, they remain impassive before the surroundings, keeping their firm and secret aim of reaching their destination. The film is made of a bit more than a dozen sequence shots –about 10 minutes each– that never leave sight of the main characters as they carry on their journey. It’s not just a technical exploit, but also a narrative feat that melts History and Aesthetics together tearing down the established models of both. Experimental ethnography or observational road movie, Let Each One… proposes a challenge for the spectators, creating a hypnotic effect through a contemplation exercise as rigorous as provocative.
