Synopsis
There are lots of documentaries about urban life featuring thousands of situations in the streets, but very few can witness the complex and conflictive situation of public space as clearly as The Power of Speech. A remodeling of the public transportation network was starting to be implemented at the Chilean capital city. The project was called Transantiago, and it contemplated many stages, including the training of the drivers in the new dynamics. But no one had thought about where to place all the street vendors and artists, all part of the old logic. Director Francisco Hervé followed the tribulations of Hardy Vallejos, a street vendor who generated a small phenomenon when he gathered more than a thousand workers to oppose the new transport economics and demand a legitimate place. A portrait of a micro-politics approach to resistance; but also a reflection on power, language, and social dynamics from an entirely new perspective.
