Synopsis
In his introduction to the Bill Douglas retrospective held by Bafici in 2006, British producer Mamoun Hassan wrote the following regarding one of Douglas’ scripts: “I had never read anything like it. There was no depiction of any event that could somehow be filmed; instead, there was a series of images and sounds that expressed feelings in a simple and concise way. It was visual storytelling. It was cinema.” Part of that essentially visual mission of one of Britain´s most original and unknown filmmakers was supported by his collection of optical toys, memorabilia, and pre-cinematographic artifacts, which Douglas would incorporate in Comrades, his last film that demanded eight years of work. Through interviews and the interaction with this collected items, Milne and Martin´s documentary addresses the creative process behind Douglas’ masterpiece, and at the same time finds an unexplored, magical, and valuable side of him.
