Synopsis
In 1958, a year after achieving artistic sophistication as well as popularity with West Side Story, choreographer and director Jerome Robbins deepens his search into contemporary dance with NY Export: Opus Jazz, a piece that dives into the exploration of urban sensitivity. Half a century later, preserving Robert Prince’s scores –but now placing it on the streets and suburbs of New York that originally inspired them– a group of dancers from the New York City Ballet reconstruct that piece, which works as a more abstract version of West Side Story’s youthful energy. Shot in 35mm with an impressive cinematography, NY Export: Opus Jazz is a film that addresses the essence of the ecstasy generated by film musicals, and at the same time poses a return to a passionate yet clean modernity. The film’s epilogue is a documentary about the value of Robbins’ work that features images of the original mise-en-scène, which prove this version is an act of artistic justice.
