Synopsis

This documentary film is the result of two complementary interests. First, the one that sits at the origin of the project: Catalonian’s Lluis Martí’s research on the healing rituals of the evuzok tribe in Cameroon and the most important of them, which is, precisely, the one called “dance to the spirits”. Related to the Rouch-style ethnographic documentary, this aspect is continued by Ricardo Iscar, who somehow makes it his own. From his previous works (Badu, La Punta del Moral, Tierra negra, The Fence) we know about his interest for threaten or disappearing communities. And, in the end, that’s what Dance to the spirits shows us with the usual rigor of this established documentary filmmaker: ancient alternative medicine practices carried out by “medicine man” Mba Owana Pierre. But, also, we see a tribe fighting for survival when it’s faced with the unstoppable advance (roads, tree cutting) of a civilization that still constitutes an attraction for the younger members of the community.
