Synopsis

The first feature film by Zavalía –a lawyer who renounced his profession and became interested in cinema, writing, and theater, and who had acquired some experience in Hollywood– is an unusual film within the incipient Argentine talkies: there are no tangos, tenements, or popular stars; and no industrial backing either. It was produced by SIFAL (Sociedad Industrial Fotográfica Argentina Ltda.) a short-life company founded by Luis Saslavsky and Alberto de Zavalía, and comprised of one’s generous father and the other one’s bountiful mother. Escala en la ciudad is about an impossible love that is born during the only night a traveler spends on land, accompanied by a prostitute. It’s a drama that efforts itself to be realist, but is conceived with unprecedented literary sophistication and rich visual quality, all of which lead to comparisons with names as important as those of Frank Borzage, Josef von Sternberg and Jacques Tourneur.
