Synopsis

In the villages of Siberia, in the former Soviet Union, time seems to stay still. Year after year, everything remains the same. But when the government decides to replace the old passports with new ones, everyone must take new photographs of themselves. For that purpose, a photographer travels around the country fields and bursts the bubble that encloses an unknown world seemingly untouched by modernity, and comes across a variety of people and situations that feel as if brought from another time and place. Past and present are mixed together with a background made of a white sheet and frontal and filling lights; they barely exchange words in a mise en abyme where the film camera captures the camera while registering gestures, expressions, and bodies that generate unimaginable interest and congeniality. A moving portrait –shot in an inevitable black and white– of dozens of grandfathers, grandmothers, parents, and peasants, all of them inhabitants of an almost unreal universe.
