Synopsis
Thousands of sheep march like an army through the prairies of the American West, in the state of Montana. The same landscapes we have seen in many films are now redefined by the presence of animals that outnumber people. In a manner that’s hereditary of filmmaker/scientists such as Jean Painlevé or Jean Rouch, the interest of directors and anthropologists Ilisa Barbash and Lucien Castaing-Taylor lies in studying the behavior of animals in their natural environment and also their relationship with man. Like in the series of farmers’ portraits shot by Depardon (La Vie Moderne), this three-years observation work carries the witnessing spirit of a time that’s about to end right in front of our eyes. The knowledge and feelings this analysis can produce are hidden inside every spectator. Apart from the amazing natural landscapes and the wonderful force of nature present in the surprising shots of Sweetgrass, this “film about sheep” becomes more than that thanks to its perspective, which is set right between science and religion.
