Synopsis

Is a place like the Navy’s School of Mechanics (ESMA) really just like any other place? What should be done there, in that place where people were massively kidnapped, tortured, killed and disappeared? What are the limits or responsibilities of cinema as a recording instrument, or as a memory building device? Fortunately,Jonathan Perel’s first film doesn’t try to answer these questions, only to recognize they are as pertinent as inevitable. And the observation work he goes through to frame and capture places and situations is his/the only possible answer. However, in that very same system Perel assumes as a strict observational premise –using shots with regulated length, James Benning-style– the trained eye will also be able to spot a precise and critical point of view regarding what takes place there. And also an idea about how a place’s meaning is built not only by the past and memories that live in it, but also by what the present perspective can say about it.
