Synopsis
Pavel Kostomarov had already surprised us last year with The Mother, where he depicted a Russian woman’s hard family life. Together is yet another intimate tour de force: it observes a grown couple in their rustic country home. The continuing verbal confrontations they engage into –part of the complex humor of a long time matrimony– hides a shameful yet noble feeling, which you can notice in the minimum looks and caresses these veteran Nordic couple shares (as well as in their small confessions when left alone with the camera). Slowly, Kostomarov starts to open the trunk of secrets: their hippie rocker past and the handicraft job that pays the bills today but used to be the symbol of an idea are all milestones of a history spent together. As if it was the icing on the cake, the film saves for last a devastating handful of images from the past. They show us those things that will never happen again: the beauty, the freedom, the dreams, and the early happy days of a marriage we feel very close to in the end.
