Synopsis
A police action sets a documentary on the trail of a small network of people who offer themselves as voluntaries to have sex with handicapped men. Among the people involved in the case there’s a young female film student and a priest. A tough ethical problem that implies prostitution, religion, and mental and physical health, that’s the starting point for Cho Kyeong-duk’s film, which sets itself as a genre game, a characteristic feature of contemporary Korean cinema. Sex Volunteer goes from the false documentary to melodrama, from cinema within cinema to a social denunciation film: But you never know when a trajectory ends and the next one begins, because everything forks and crosses again, in a path that even goes back on its own steps in order to recap, redefine, distort, reflect on, and search for new forms of emotion and insight.
