Synopsis

Francisca finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her, so she calls her friend Pato and they go to spend the weekend at her family’s beach house in Los Vilos. Pato might be just crouching, waiting for the chance to hit on Francisca; or maybe he and Francisca just want to catch up with their friendship. But, on the way to the beach, they find Sofía, a hitchhiker. Joaquin Mora’s first film has a clear and simple structure that starts by setting up a playground for the desires, wishes, and emotions of those three characters. Mora shows a steady hand for storytelling, a thorough capacity for revealing gestures, and a special ability to go from social situations (let’s call them that) where three is the key number, to other ones ruled by the intimacy of two people. In that friction is where Weekend becomes a film about loneliness as a permanent landscape, and also about the fleeting moments where seems to be a chance of pushing it away. And the film is also the demonstration of Godard’s old adagio about how you only need a car, a guy and a girl to make a film. Well, here there are two girls, and also the impressive Chilean landscape.
