Synopsis

“You can’t take excitement or boredom without cigarettes”, says Liechti in a moment of this cinematographic journal that registers him trying to quit smoking. On each attempt, the filmmaker sets himself on a long walk from Zurich to his home town, and his tobacco withdrawal shows itself in his growing verbal rampages against everything he finds on his way. His neurosis seems to sharpen his eye and mind, but little it does to ease him from the pain of addiction. On the way, Liechti finds new meanings for Swiss identity, the neatness of the peasants –check out what one of them does with his pet pig– and the ironies of progress: a sign reads “man works and spends, pays taxes and dies”.
