Synopsis
1979: Director Chris Petit films his road movie masterpiece Radio On. 1998: In hommage to the film’s brilliant cinematographer Martin Schäfer (who died unexpectedly in 1988), Petit, accompanied by editor Emma Matthews, returns to the locations of his ground-breaking first work. Where Radio On anticipated the social and cultural upheavals of the 1980s, its remix signposts the millennium and catalogues the shifts in landscape and architecture, as well as changes in the medium. An intense highway meditation, it collages distressed video with Super 8, archive material with contemporary footage, and original text with Bruce Gilbert’s radical disruption of the original’s soundtrack.
