Synopsis

Just like he did in his remembered Dealer, in In the Shadows Thomas Arslan once again describes a delinquent life in detail; in this case, the life of a thief who just got out of prison. There is suspense, but that’s not the narration’s only goal; the character does not reveal himself through his thoughts or confessions, but through the internal mechanics of his activity. As Hemingway did with his fishermen, Arslan focuses in the functionality of the movements made by his character Trojan (Misel Maticevic), a professional who only seems to find satisfaction in a successful hit. This, at the same time, connects Arslan –in some way– with specialists such as Jean-Pierre Mélville. “To deconstruct or transcend –that wouldn’t have interested me. I tried to be as classical as possible… As Rohmer rightly said many years ago, all the original stories have already been told. In that sense, films in and beyond the genre are always initially on the same level.”
