Synopsis
Niu Hongmiao is a young sex worker in Beijing. Xu Tong’s camera, without condescension or judgement, follows her closely, with surprisingly unlimited access. We see her daily routine, her co-workers and clients at the cheap brothel where she works, and the language and rituals of this semi-underground world. Xu Tong also follows Niu home during the wheat harvest season, to her village in Hebei province, where her farming family, who seems not to know her occupation, needs the money she makes to pay for her seriously ill father’s medical care.
One of the most controversial of recent Chinese documentaries (for its refusal to shield the identity of its subject), this bracingly honest film shows one woman in extraordinary but also quite typical circumstances struggling with dignity to make it as a rural migrant in the Chinese urban world.
