Synopsis
Mark begins with the analysis of an image, and then goes on to the person it depicts, who hides behind an expression. Many people share some fine memories of Mark Karbusicky, who apparently is no longer among them. A few minutes later we learned that, indeed, Mark is dead; and so begins the colossal task of making a portrait out of the words of the people who knew him, as well as a wide variety of materials: Super 8 home movies, photographs, and even the animal videos Mark used to collect. From a bike-riding childhood and teenage impressions of Mick Jagger and Blondie, to adult friendships and relationships –far from melancholy and necrophilia– filmmaker (and Mark’s friend) Mike Hoolbloom makes a moving album that takes identical steps both towards the intimate journal and to the story of the Canadian underground scene. How to provide homogeneity to an immense range of different elements, or what is it that can get us so close to someone whom we’ve never met, are just some of the many intrigues this documentary poses.
