Synopsis
Right from the beginning of punk rock, the “Do It Yourself” (DIY) motto was essential to the bands’ outraged sound. Relating to their instruments in a non-academic way, songs would uncover a music that was close to the primal scream as an expression gesture as authentic as destabilizing. Femme Rock Doc finds that very same punk root in today’s Chilean all-women bands. Lilits, Niña con Frenillos, Besos con Lengua, and Las Jonathan are four visceral rock bands with diverse sounds that coincide in their relaxed and experimental connection to music. Both the testimonies and the band members carry a radical informality, free from the speculation of legitimacy that’s typical or a certain area of the rock world. The emergence of women bands can be seen as a genuine consequence of the Michelle Bachelet era, from a post-Pinochet rock scene that was the seedbed of feminist punk freedom. In the soon-to-be conservative government of Sebastián Piñeyra, the task of resisting will be theirs, who so far have proven to do it with pride and sensibility.
