Synopsis
A man and a woman speak different languages; they do not understand each other too well. They are the memories of Ingrid Bergman and Marcello Mastroianni, inhabiting an area that equals the square surface of the film screen; a tortuous, mysterious, and ethereal terrain, inhabited only by the movement of a grayish, almost volcanic, smoke. They’re in the exact place where memories melt together with dreams and individual visions, where they can experience the joyful awkwardness of forgetting, that elusive quality of remembering that is gracefully explained in the title. The filmic specters become confusing –those of Stromboli, L’Avventura, Last year in Marienbad, but also others– around and beyond Neorealism and the Nouvelle Vague, in a phantasmagoric dimension created by cinema where the viewer also coexists. Christelle Lheureux explores that spectral nature of the film image and how it casts shadows between matter and the darkness of the unconscious, between what’s there and what vanishes.
