Synopsis

“The sequence I prefer is the one of the combat between the cangaçeiro and Antonio das Mortes. Well, that staging was not mine. I told the crew: ‘Let’s film the combat between San Jorge and the Dragon’. And an old lady appeared and said: ‘Ah, the combat… I know a song…’ From the moment she started to sing, we got ready to visualize the combat. The actors started to move according to the music’s effect while I was looking at the representation being shaped. The participants found their places naturally.” This was how Glauber Rocha remembered the sequel to his Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol, set 29 years after the hunter of the title killed all the sertão bandits, and in which he is called once more to put an end to a new kind of popular leader. The apparent simplicity of Glauber’s memory, contrasted against the actual film, works as a perfect prove of an aesthetic as deceitful as hard to define.
