Synopsis

The film adaptation of Fabián Casas same-titled novel doesn’t have many words in it. It’s not that their absence is noticeable –which might surprise those who read the original piece, but not those who face the film it with virgin eyes (and years). It’s just that the best possible idleness is the one you experience in solitary; as solitary as the life led by Andrés, which features a constant soundtrack that tries to fill the void in his days and nights. He lives with his brother and his father, but the only way the three of them might coincide in the house’s dining room is by a stroke of chance. Idleness has a clear rocker spirit (a fact confirmed by the guitar riffs that shape up the leit motiv, as well as by the endless cameos of local rock stars), but it also exists beyond those references. Recent Argentine cinema never got to fully describe a neighborhood spirit, or to talk about adolescence and loneliness the way this first film (for only one of its directors) does. A film that faces many challenges (adapting such a personal book, mixing non professional actors with very experienced ones, filming well known places as if it were the first time someone did) and still dares to meet them in a crushing way. As Damon Albarn whispered in Leisure (yes, Blur’s opera prima): there’s no other way to do it.
