Synopsis

A survivor of 20th century horror, Svetlana Geier is one of those characters who seem to have lived many lives. However, Jendreyko has managed to address her story in all of its complexity –and without overwhelming us with pure information. On one side, he builds a current portrait of an eighty year-old woman who never stopped being haunted by the memories of the Stalinist persecution suffered by both her and her father. And, maybe in a more ambiguous way, also by the ones of her delicate involvement with the Nazi occupation in the Ukraine (back when she placed her knowledge of the German language at the service of an officer in order to save her life). At the same time, there´s also the professional, erudite Geier who’s responsible for the prestigious German translations of Dostoievski´s novels, which are the five elephants from the film´s title. The complexity is solved through images that are marked by certain closeness, the simplicity of a pictorial sensibility, and also thanks to the attention it pays to the protagonist´s words, which are sometimes absorbed by the rigor she applies to her work and almost always tainted by the pain from experiencing too many losses.
