Synopsis

In Matías Meyer’s cinema relations are built slowly. Moreover, the relation of man and nature comes before the one between men. And so, in his first film Wadley the main characters were a man and the impressive dessert near Real de Catorce. In The Cramp, he shows us a French man who is alone in a fishermen town in the Mexican Pacific coast: the Chacahua Lagoons in Oaxaca. Julien, the Frenchman, is not just lonely but also sad, isolated, and almost depressed. His encounter with Pablo, a fisherman living in the town, will “reconnect” Julien with his surroundings and even spring a hidden and faint joy. Meyer shoots his small stories without invading his characters’ life mysteries, and with a documentary perspective that observes –in a contemplative and deeply respectful way– the relationship this two human beings have with a nature that stands before us –kindly and with some fine cinematographic tools– looking majestic and transcendental.
