Synopsis

Original Title: Goal

A new cinematographic challenge that features an estranged and dirty realism. A woman who rolls around in mud meets a man with whom she engages in a sadomasochist relationship that reaches unusually unbearable levels. There’s plenty of gender violence and also an incredible performatic force in both actors. Shot in Super8, the film’s grain and pulse turns each image more and more deformed without ever losing physical immediacy with the actors, creating an extremist form of aesthetics. The graphic brutality of the situations finds an altered, visceral and sudden echo that becomes concrete within a provocative aesthetic coherence, in the best tradition of underground cinema. Set in an ambiguous industrial future that seems a lot like the present day, Exhausted follows one of Kim Gok’s artistic concerns: the political aspect behind violence against the body. Korean cinema proves again that it still has very sharp teeth.
