Synopsis

Thea Barfoed can´t balance her life even when she´s on stage. When she climbs on it she seems to dominate all those things that become ineptitude and inability to defocus once back in her private life, even if she eagerly wants to rebuild her bond with her children and restore a rational relationship with her ex-husband. Although she’s doing Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, the ghost she’s talking to is Opening Night’s Gena Rowlands, with whom she has a more than obvious connection. In any case, what links her to Cassavettes’ Mytle Gordon is the fact that this Thea is Paprika Steen, who dives into her role as a frail an alcohol-beaten actress, just like a hurricane with huge power and truth; she takes on the role in such a way the spectator might hesitate on whether who is out there, the character or the actress. This is just one of the merits of this film by Martin Peter Zandvliet, who in his first fiction feature manages to create an intense atmosphere in which love becomes a chimerical objective that is constantly searched and lost. The film ends up being less an actress’ story than an essay about the desperate need to love and be loved. The title Applause… remains ironic and brilliant.
