Synopsis

Norteado begins, develops, and ends in the exact same place: the over-filmed Mexico-USA border. But right from Andres’ very first attempt to reach his uncertain promised land –silently shot, and remarkably edited by Miguel Schverdfinger, the same of Lucrecia Martel’s The Headless Woman– Norteado differentiates itself from the usual approaches to the misfortunes of illegal aliens. Instead, Perezcano chooses to settle with his character in that limbo called Tijuana and follow him in his instinctive determination to cross into the beyond (beyond that ominous metallic wall dividing the two countries) but also, and most specially, in the bonds he establishes with Ela and Cata. Owner and employee of the grocery store where Andres goes every time his plans fail, they both have seen how their own husbands got lost and never came back from the terra incognita behind the wall. In the everyday life of that temporary community –that goes as far as performing an imaginative and almost absurd last attempt at crossing– Norteado finds a fresh view –at times almost a documentary, at times a near comedy– about life in that border that is as illusory as the rest, and concrete as none other.
