Elia Kazan

Born in 1909 in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire (today’s Istanbul, Turkey), he emigrated to America with his family when he was 4 years old. An actor, stage director and co-founder of the Actors Studio, he directed A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), On the Waterfront (1954), and East of Eden (1955), among other films. He won the Oscar for Best Director twice. He died in 2003 in New York.
