Synopsis
An exciting approach to Bergman and his work from different angles, all of them particularly attractive: 1. The documentary is led by Liv Ullman. 2. It features all of these filmmakers, who were somehow influenced by Bergman: Woody Allen, Olivier Assayas, Bernardo Bertolucci, Arnaud Desplechin, John Sayles, Lars von Trier, and Martin Scorsese. 3. There’s behind-the-scenes material from eight Bergman films, including Persona, Cries and Whispers, and Saraband (the fragments are part of the archive Bergman donated in 2002). Those images feature Bergman talking to his actors and actresses, his cinematographer Sven Nykvist, Bergman placing the camera, etc. 4. Finally, we see a few segments of the films we saw him prepare. If the ferocious and brilliant Saraband was Bergman’s farewell, this documentary by Stig Björkman (a follow up to Images from the Playground) uses first class footage to focus on getting to know him even more and keeping him always present for his devoted followers.
