Synopsis
At first, Los abrazos del río can be mistaken for an observational documentary about the Magdalena River in Colombia. But as the minutes go by, the images and stories gain presence, and one can begin to see how Rincón Gille’s film is much more than that. Because the river is revealed as a flow that connects towns, but mostly also stories, both human and violent. The river is also the home for the legend of Mohan, a mythological evil being, although lately it has lost part of its importance against the region’s powerful reality. The river has its source, course and mouth. And, just like a replication of that structure, both the legend and the truth –the myth and the data– intertwine with the quiet pace of the waters creating stories the living tell about the dead, and finally end up resting next to the wastes Colombian society pours into the river: the abandoned children of a land that won’t claim them, and witnesses their existence incapable of expressing anything.
