Synopsis

In Raja, Doillon changes his usual settings for a new and provocative exploration of contemporary sentimental relationships, its different variations, and obstacles. Marrakesh, the red city in the Moroccan interior, is the background of a relationship crossed by all kinds of contrasts (social ones, for starters) Raja is an Arab and poor 19 year-old orphan; her boyfriend forces her to work as a prostitute, and she doesn’t speak more than two or three words of French. Fred is the exact opposite, an European, rich and educated fifty-some man who lives like a sultan among Matisse paintings and gardens with palm trees. But since this is a Doillon film, they meet and apparently fall in love, and so a merciless psychological battle to ensure the almost military conquest of the other begins. The difference of power, age, culture, and language are new dimensions in those unique painful desire games Doillon creates to draw a growingly complex –and desperate, like when Fred offers to pay for Raja’s wedding with her pimp boyfriend– vision of the different forms of contemporary love.
