Synopsis

The novel Watership Down, by British author Richard Adams, became an instant classic when published in 1975; the list of famous fans of the book goes from Paul McCartney to Stephen King and Richard Kelly, who undoubtedly found inspiration in it for Donnie Darko. (The director’s cut features Donnie and his classmates discussing Watership Down.) Although the novel was intended for children, the adventures of rabbits searching for a new home lack no drama and bloody scenes, which in Martin Rosen’s animated version became clearly graphic. This actually turned it into an adult-oriented film, and limited its distribution in some countries like Argentina, where it was never commercially released. This outstanding film adaptation accentuates the book’s allegorical elements and brings it closer to the tone of Animal Farm (Orwell’s novel, which also had its own animated version) than to the current trend of children’s literature.
