Synopsis
We’ll never know for sure the age of Ellen, but we will see it’s not something she finds easy to deal with. Especially after her boyfriend announces he got another woman pregnant. That will provoke a panic attack on a plane during take-off (oh, Ellen is –or was, as you’ll see– a stewardess), and that leads to her getting fired. The amazing chain of events that follows doesn’t carry the same relentless logic of these preludes, and we better not spoil too much. It’s enough to know they include a sex party; a vegan community; giant polystyrene trays, chickens and mice released in the city, and African guerrillas charging toll. Despite what this enumeration might suggest, At Ellen’s Age is a story that never looses sight of its destination; thanks to the powerful performance of Balibar as the disturbed heroine of the title, and most of all, to the talent of Pia Marais –which she had already shown in The Unpolished– for making an animal, muscle-tensed cinema, in which the extraordinaire injects into everyday life like a slow, silent poison.
