Synopsis

The director (who’s first film, I Went to the Zoo the Other Day, was screened in Bafici ‘10) travels from his home in Canada to his birth country, China, in order to make this intimate and family-driven documentary inspired by the childhood memories of his father. The two main characters are featured in the film’s title: there’s water, which covers many of the frames (whether as rivers, lakes, or a heavy rain), and there’s the constant presence of the director’s father, who isn’t just a narrator and a character: he also conducts a thorough revision –including suggestions and comments– of the film his son is making. Luo includes his advices word for word, maybe to illustrate the intrinsic utility of the wish to capture other person’s memories on film. The Proustian tone in the setting of old anecdotes acts as the frame for a subtle reflection about the relationship between father and son, right there between the wish to honor the elderly and the search for a personal aesthetic and memory.
