Synopsis
Perhaps the biggest fear there was when people found out that Abbas Kiarostami was planning to make a film set in the Italian Tuscany with Juliette Binoche was that the Iranian filmmaker would abandon both his territory and thematic universe. But just as it happened with Hou Hsiao-hsien in Flight of the Red Balloon –also starred by Binoche, who might be a muse for exiled directors– Kiarostami sets up the map of his cinema over the European countryside and turns this journey between a man and a woman who barely know each other –or maybe they’re life-long acquaintances and pretend their not– into an exploration of the connection there is between fiction and reality, between an original and its copy, forcing us to rethink these conventions with new criteria. Sort of a cross between Taste of Cherry and Through the Olive Trees with elements from Life Goes On, Kiarostami transforms the Tuscany landscape into one of those fluctuating roads from Iran, his home country, and sends the spectators through a road that comes, goes, gets twisted, and ends up crashing against itself. Or maybe against its shadow, casted on a film screen.
