Synopsis
Young Mertkan lives an apathetic life: he works (as little as he can) on his father’s construction company, studies –or pretends to do so–, hangs out with his friends and watch girls ice-skating on the malls of Istanbul. He doesn’t seem to care much about anything. However, when he starts a relationship with Gül, a young Kurdish girl from Eastern Turkey, his father disapproves of him and he then must choose between rebellion and conformity. As despicable as lovable, this anti-hero masterfully played by Bartu Küçükçaglayan shows on every shot the suffering expression of someone who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders: every hardship, from the smallest to the most tragic ones is something he can’t overcome, and so he turns inaction into a lifestyle. Majority’s greatest virtue is not exposing the prejudices of Istanbul middle class, but building a drama with strokes of black humor, a failed Bildungsroman, a ferocious critique to certain young people who are incapable of becoming adults.
