Synopsis
On his new film –the great winner in the last Berlinale– the director of About Elly focuses on the relationship between the two characters of the title. Simin has made all the arrangements to obtain the visas she needs to get out of Iran with her husband Nader and their daughter Termeh; but he refuses to go because he has to take care of his father, who suffers from Alzheimer. She then leaves home and files for divorce. He stays in the apartment with Termeh and is forced to hire a housekeeper to take care of his father. After that initial situation associated to family melodrama, a complicated courtroom thriller starts mixing up greed and guilt and goes through all kinds of moral dilemmas, transforming the film into an intense and revealing portrait of society’s big changes and contradictions between tradition and modernity in the Persian society. With great formal strength and a plot that becomes more and more complex with each consequence, Nader and Simin, a Separation tears down all preconceptions about the alleged common places and limitations of Iranian cinema.
