Synopsis
Like Gabriel Mascaró, Marcelo Lordello is a member of the new generation of Pernambuco filmmakers, and he makes his directorial debut with a documentary as thorough as its protagonists. Entirely shot at night, Vigias features half a dozen watchmen from downtown buildings in Recife. Apart from the climate, the “security” guards are not that different from the ones we see here in Barrio Norte and Recoleta. The camera follows them in their methodical tours through the places they guard: usually the gardens and parking lots surrounding tower buildings, separated from the sidewalk by a perimeter fence they obsessively keep, proud of their reclusion. But the film also listens to them and encourages their paranoid and distrustful stories. The variety of anecdotes and conspiracy theories floats through the night like the unconscious of a society who lives together with its fears and their reverse: guilt. When the day comes, the guards become part of the outside world again; once their shift is done, they climb on buses and join to the same society they try to isolate from after sundown.
