Synopsis
Two women and a death stroke to reactionary Islam. In Muslim culture’s context of male domination, Sara Khoshjamal-Fekri stands as a real threat: she kicked her way through and became a Tae Kwon Do champion, one of Iran’s main athletes, and the first Iranian woman to ever classify for the Olympic Games. Wearing a rigorous hijab –the shameful garment Iranian culture imposes on women– the skillful athlete and her trainer Maryam Azarmehr become the lead characters in Fatima Geza Abdollahyan’s debut film, a documentary that carries as much sporting emotion –thanks to its well sustained suspense– as political confrontation, featuring the intimate bond there is between two women as they train for the Beijing Olympics. And on every detail of the training, Kick in Iran enables a freedom of the female body, featuring a triumphant vigor that’s beyond any outcome: what matters here is the process by which emancipation is waved in favor of ending gender submission.
