Synopsis

Back when digital video was not a short cut to capture everyday life (and often also a trap), Aldo Garay bursted in with Yo, la más tremendo (1995) which turned to the portraits of sexual diversity’s marginal areas and found a form of documentary exploration with a refreshing and rigorous eye that combined the rawness of direct recording with an intimate and chameleonic camera that blended into very different landscapes. A focus of his work held in Bafici 2006 pushed Garay’s films into circulation, showing his personal path during a vital and prolific decade. Now, three short films from the TV series Orientales rewrite their origins with the genesis of trans culture, which goes from Gloria Meneses –the very first Latin American transvestite– passes through the feminine alter ego of playwright Alberto Restuccia, and lands in the rural life of a Trotskyist transvestite and Broad Front activist. With El casamiento, Garay sharpens up by stripping off his stoic style of observation, and he produces a narrative force that opens the way for plain emotions only a free eye can spot in the middle of an austere reality.
