Synopsis

A collaborator of Marcelo Gomes and author of some crazy short films like Rapace (Bafici 2009), João Nicolau manages to extend and develop those ideas in his first film, creating a true rebuttal to the notion that independent film equals an economy of events. The characters in A espada e a rosa despise the crowds and so they go through the world as if it was theirs, eager to make things happen. On the way, they also manage to challenge our image of Portuguese cinema, genre labels, and also, why not, the laws of physics. Manuel (Manuel Mesquita, who also starred in Rapace) leaves his home hounded by tax debts –which are analyzed in a funny musical duel with the collector– and determined to take on the whole world. And so, he will find a group of misfits who live on a boat and plan to make a living out of ¡piracy! But of course, this is the 21st century, and their boarding will be astronomical… But we shouldn’t spoil too much: A espada e a rosa is full of surprises.
