This time, Doillon decides to get inside a family structure that’s filled with complexities and is led by Emmanuel, who lives constantly torn between his current family and the one he formed in the past. He’s the father of Elisa, a ten year old daughter he had on his first marriage and with whom he has more and more trouble communicating with. There’s a gap pushing them apart that threatens to intensify. In order to stop this, Emmanuel tries to rebuild the bond during the weekends he spends with her, and in this context they set out on a trip from Southern France to Spain, making their own film together. Doillon’s camera mixes with the father’s and gathers Elisa’s words, with whom Emmanuel seems to have found a new communication channel. But at the same time, his current wife and, mostly, his step-daughter both seem unable to tolerate the absence of the film’s protagonist, and especially the knowledge of the kind of bonds that are being forged away from their home.
