Synopsis
A female voice (Vanessa Redgrave) narrates the discovery of some film reels and notebooks in an abandoned caravan that belonged to someone named Robinson, a character Keiller had already introduced us to in two previous films, London (1994) and Robinson in Space (1997), both narrated by Paul Scofield. Robinson’s images take us on a tour through Oxfordshire and Berkshire by the sound of news of a financial crisis that broke in 2008. The comments on current events refer to the first rural uprisings recorded in Oxfordshire in the 16th century, because Robinson in Ruins is a sort of Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind about the evolution of capitalism in the United Kingdom and the consolidation of liberal policies. A fervently landscape-driven film as that draws both on Constable and Turner and on environmental sustainability; and originated by an academic research about “the future of landscapes and the moving image”.
