Synopsis

Astronomers from all over the world gather to watch the stars in the Atacama Desert in Chile, at three thousand feet above sea level. The desert is a huge, timeless space made of salt and wind. It’s a portion of Mars on Earth. Everything sits still, and yet the surface is filled with mysterious marks. There are villages that were built a thousand years ago. There are also 19th century mining trains abandoned on the tracks. There are domes that look like spaceships buried right where the astronomers live. There are bones everywhere. At night, the Milky Way is so dazzling it casts shadows on the ground. Since the light of the stars takes many years to get to Earth, astronomers believe the only real time is the one that comes from the past. So they’re always looking back. Same thing happens to historians, archeologists, geologists, paleontologists; and also the women who search for the remains of their family members, who where political prisoners during the dictatorship. They all look back in order to have a better understanding of the future. Faced with the uncertainty of the future, the past speaks to us.
