Synopsis
In a tourist complex in Glücksburg, a German town on the Baltic Sea, Jürgen Stenzel draws a series of partly real and partly invented color-saturated landscapes with a certain naïf streak, but also an idiosyncrasy and spontaneity that are far from any academicism or speculation about the art world. In order to capture that meticulous and unpredictable fiber-drawn universe, René Frölke depicts the young Stenzel and his mother Edeltraud making a family portrait that gets away from the norm. Featuring original minimalist animation and testimonial blocks with hypnotic storytelling, the film’s stealth viewpoint remains alert both to negligible and decisive elements as it disperses with the same vitality and freedom of vacation times, and creates a microclimate where everyday life becomes more and more strange. The documentary experience reaches a perplexity veiled from the mundane and expands just like a stroke in Jürgen’s drawing widening reality’s range of colors.
