A RELIGION WITHOUT ATHEISTS

UNA RELIGION SIN ATEOS 07 Thu 2011

“A film about faith and football.” This sentence defines the Danish documentary Football is God by Ole Bendtzen, based in the passion unleashed by Boca in Argentina and more specifically in its temple, the famous stadium La Bombonera. Centered in three characters, a regular match-goer who is capable of crying over the memory of a goal scored in the seventies, a lady who gives out candy treats to the fans, and a follower of the Maradonian Church, Football… is an interesting look at the Argentine phenomenon, which is sometimes unexplainable to th e eyes of foreigners. The scheduled screenings are as follows: Thursday 7, 5.30 pm and Saturday 9, 10.15 pm at Hoyts 5, and Thursday 14, 9.45 pm at Alianza Francesa.

This Thursday at 6.00 pm at the Meeting Point, Festival will be presented, the novel by cult writer César Aira, which he conceived last year in the spare time he had between screenings as a member of the Official Jury of the BAFICI. Together with the prestigious author, the Festival’s Artistic Director Sergio Wolf will also be at the presentation. Aira, native of Coronel Pringles—a town in the south of the Buenos Aires Province—has a particular public profile and a personal style that has turned him, with the years and the books, into an object of devotion among his readers.

THE FESTIVAL IS UNDERWAY

EL FESTIVAL ESTÁ EN MARCHA 07 Thu 2011

After a few words by Minister of Culture Hernán Lombardi and the Festival’s Artistic Director Sergio Wolf, the Argentine actor and director Juan Minujin—together with much of the film’s cast, including Leonardo Sbaraglia—presented the world premiere of Vaquero, the film that was chosen to officially open the 13th edition of BAFICI. It was 25 past 8 on a warm Wednesday evening in Buenos Aires, when lights went off and cinema began at the picturesque Cine Teatro 25 de Mayo. First came the screening of three official festival trailers—which will be screened before every film—entitled Screen Tests #1 and Screen Tests #2, both by Martín Rejtman; Pibes, by Raúl Perrone; and Traslación humana en rotación terrestre, by Grupo Humus. After these, there came the time for the vicissitudes and deliberations of an actor trapped in a labyrinth of frustration and ambition—the main character of the story portrayed in Vaquero.

This coming Wednesday, the world premiere of the Argentine film Vaquero—debut film by actor and director Juan Minujín—opens the 13th edition of the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Film, best known among the city’s festival goers as BAFICI. It will be 11 days of pure quality cinema: from the “recovered” version of Metropolis to the first short films exhibition featuring works by young Argentine directors, from the premiere in Argentina of the Spanish blockbuster Torrente 4 to a retrospective of Jean Luc Godard, from the restored Il gattopardo (just like it was screened at Cannes last year) to the movies for children and adults of the “Little Bafici” section. In the aforementioned examples lies the key to the diversity, aesthetic-narrative exploration and quality pursued by the Festival—and happily found. Past, present and future of the good cinema that people in Buenos Aires love.

CULINARY VANGUARD

LA VANGUARDIA 05 Tue 2011

Spanish cuisine is a world trademark, but in the 21st century, like never before, it has reaffirmed its presence by the hand of the main character of this documentary. Ferrán Adriá stars in El Bulli: Cooking in Progress, by German director Gereon Wetzel. The film shows the “kitchen”—literally—of probably the world’s most famous and exclusive restaurant, located on the shores of the Mediterranean, headed by the Catalan chef. This fascinating trip to the center of culinary vanguard will be featured on Saturday 9 at 7.00 pm at Arteplex Belgrano, Wednesday 13 at 8.45 pm at Hoyts 12 and Saturday 16 at 11.30 am at Cine Teatro 25 de Mayo. Tickets are available for purchase on www.festivales.gob.ar, or personally at Hoyts General Cinema Abasto and Casa de la Cultura, from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm.
