Synopsis
On his fourth film as a director, the exceptional actor Amalric –he’s also the film’s star– plays a former TV producer who leaves everything behind and joins a group of veteran, eccentric American strippers for an intense tour he himself organizes in different French cities, mostly big ports. This father of two (pretty incapable, by the way), divorced and with a disorganized life, will unsuccessfully try to use his old contacts in the show-business to sustain the show, which is called Cabaret New Burlesque. With scenes filled with wit and audacity, one should thank that filmmaker Amalric bets on a lively, visceral cinema that includes Céline’s provocative literature, All That Jazz, Pedro Almodovar’s films, Federico Fellini’s aesthetics, John Cassavetes’ spirit, a certain John Waters-like delirium, and, of course, a strong influence from the tragicomic tone of his friend and mentor Arnaud Desplechin.
