Synopsis
Kim Longinotto’s camera is usually focused on people who are in a disadvantage position when faced against power, society, or other human beings who use violence against them. They are often women or children, but it’s always, always the women who take charge and modify those unjust situations using every means possible. In Pink Saris, the camera focuses on Sampat Pal Devi, the leader of a brave group of women who form an organization called “Pink Squad” (Gulabi Gang), women who fight against evil as if they were superheroes who also concern about their image enough to carry on their crusade dressed with the pink tunics from the title, and try to fight in different ways against the patriarchal traditions of Indian society, which usually keeps women oppressed or punishes them unfairly.
